5. Gender Equality

Introduction:

More than 10 % of the global population lives in extreme poverty today; they struggle to fulfil the most basic needs like health needs, educational desires, and access to healthy water, sanitation, and clothing. Most people living on less than the minimum daily financial needs are common in rural areas. Worldwide, the poverty rate in rural areas is 17.2 %—more than three times higher than in urban areas. One child amongst five lives in extreme poverty. Ensuring social protection for all children, especially girls and other vulnerable groups, is critical to reducing poverty. It shows up as starvation and malnutrition, restricted access to healthcare and other necessities.

5. Gender Equality

Introduction:

Discrimination based on gender undermines the fundamental basis of our community and reduces the value of each individual. It is a massive waste of human potential that goes much beyond a simple violation of human rights. We deny half of the world's population the chance to enjoy life to the fullest when we deny women equal rights. All people living in our globe will benefit when women achieve political, economic, and social parity. Together, we can eradicate prejudice and work toward granting everyone the same rights and respect. Even though both men and women have equal rights under the Indian constitution, gender inequality still exists. Research indicates that gender prejudice is pervasive and primarily favors men in a number of contexts, most notably the workplace.
As stated in Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG 5), gender equality is a cornerstone idea and a key factor in the advancement of human rights, the economy, and society. Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, Pune (DPU) is dedicated to creating a society in which people of all genders are afforded equal rights and opportunities in all spheres of life. The United Nations' definition of gender equality is a core component of our educational purpose and is strongly aligned with our principles of empowerment, inclusivity, and diversity.

Relevance of gender equality in the context of the institution

Gender equality is fundamental to the mission of any healthcare institution, as it strives to provide equitable healthcare services. In the context of healthcare, gender equality not only addresses the disparities in access to services but also enhances health outcomes for all individuals. Healthcare institutions like DPU play a crucial role in promoting gender-sensitive practices, ensuring that both men and women receive appropriate care tailored to their specific needs. This includes recognizing and addressing the unique health challenges faced by women, such as reproductive health issues and gender-based violence, which often remain underrepresented in traditional healthcare frameworks.
Moreover, fostering gender equality within the healthcare workforce promotes diverse perspectives and leadership, leading to better decision-making and improved service delivery. By empowering female healthcare professionals and ensuring equal representation in leadership roles, DPU can enhance its ability to respond effectively to the health needs of diverse populations. Incorporating gender equality into DPU’s healthcare policies and practices not only aligns with global commitments such as the Sustainable Development Goals but also contributes to the overall well-being of communities. By prioritizing gender equality, DPU can ensure that all individuals receive comprehensive, inclusive, and effective healthcare, ultimately fostering a healthier society.
