ICMR Clinical Trial Centre

Clinical trial Centre at Dr. D.Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, Pune provides an avenue for research that will lead to improved understanding of recent developments in clinical research. The Centre is approved by Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) as Clinical Trial Centre (ICCT) for Western Region. Clinical trial Center was incepted in December 2005 at the department of Paediatrics of Dr. D.Y. Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre and has so far conducted more than 50 clinical trials . Since opening in December 2015, our dedicated and self-contained clinical research and trials facility has revolutionized how trials are conducted. With multi- disciplinary team of researchers on purpose-built Translational research facility at the precinct, the center has been successfully building on enhancing collaboration and links between basic and clinical research and patient care. Biography

Dr. Ajay K. Singh is Senior Associate Dean for Postgraduate Medical Education at Harvard Medical School and Director of the Master in Medical Sciences in Clinical Investigation (MMSCI) program.

He leads a vibrant group of faculty and staff in developing and overseeing postgraduate medical education at HMS, as well as the Master's program in Clinical Investigation. He has been Executive Director for the Dubai Harvard Foundation of Medical Research since 2008.

Dr. Singh completed his undergraduate and medical training in England at University College London School of Medicine. He moved to Boston in 1987 for his clinical and research renal fellowship at Tufts-New England Medical Center, which he finished in 1992 when he joined the Tufts University faculty. In 1998, he moved to the Brigham and Women’s Hospital — one of the principal teaching hospitals of Harvard Medical School — as Clinical Director of the Renal Division and Director of Dialysis Services and Associate Professor of Medicine at HMS.

In 2008, he became Chief Academic Officer and Executive Director of the Dubai Harvard Foundation for Medical Research (DHFMR). Dr. Singh’s interests are in clinical research — with a particular focus on the anemia of chronic kidney disease. He led ground-breaking studies in anemia of kidney disease, including the CHOIR study, which was published in the New England Journal of Medicine, and well as being a member of the steering committees for the TREAT and DRIVE studies. More recently, he has taken on the role of leading the ASCEND Clinical development program — a phase 3 program for the development of a novel propyl hydroxylase inhibitor Daprodustat.

Dr. Singh is currently Chair of the Editorial Board for Nephrology Times and formerly Editor-in-Chief of Scientific American Medicine. He leads the office of Postgraduate Medical Education at the Brigham and Women's Hospital and in this capacity leads several HMS CME courses.

As a leading health sciences institution, the Vidyapeeth places a strong emphasis on improving health outcomes and promoting holistic well-being for the local community. In the academic year 2022-2023, the Vidyapeeth organized 289 community outreach and extension activities, directly benefiting over 44,952 individuals and involving more than 5,436 student volunteers. These activities covered crucial health topics including hygiene, nutrition, family planning, chronic disease management, mental health, and healthy aging. World Mental Health Day (10/10/2022)

Mental health has emerged as a critical concern, particularly post-pandemic, with rising rates of stress, anxiety, and depression in the community. To address this, Dr. D.Y. Patil Vidyapeeth conducted a series of mental health awareness activities on World Mental Health Day. The activities included:

• Street Plays: Organized by the College of Nursing, these plays were performed in community spaces, using drama to convey messages about stress management, recognizing signs of depression, and the importance of seeking help. The street plays were highly engaging and reached 103 beneficiaries.
• Poster Presentations: Nursing and medical students created informative posters on mental health topics, focusing on stress reduction techniques and promoting mental well-being for all. These were displayed at the Urban Health Training Center (UHTC) in Pimpri, where faculty members held discussions with the public on managing stress and maintaining mental health.

The event’s key message was aligned with the World Health Organization (WHO) theme, “Make mental health and well-being for all a global priority,” emphasizing the importance of addressing mental health issues in all demographic groups. Feedback from participants highlighted that many individuals were unaware of available mental health resources, and the event encouraged several participants to seek counseling services.

World Heart Day (29/09/2022)

Cardiovascular diseases remain a leading cause of mortality in India. On World Heart Day, Dr. D.Y. Patil Vidyapeeth organized a health rally that encouraged the community to adopt heart-healthy behaviors. The theme of the rally, “Use Heart for Every Heart,” emphasized the importance of lifestyle changes such as regular exercise, a balanced diet, and avoiding smoking. Students from the medical, dental, and physiotherapy colleges participated, distributing pamphlets and offering blood pressure screenings to the public.

World Diabetes Day (14/11/2022)

India is often referred to as the diabetes capital of the world, making World Diabetes Day a crucial event for public health education. The Vidyapeeth’s activities included:

• Awareness Talks: Held at the Rural Health Training Center (RHTC) in Alandi, these talks educated the community on the importance of early detection, lifestyle modifications, and regular blood glucose monitoring.
• Diabetes Screenings: Free blood sugar testing was provided to 70 beneficiaries, followed by personalized counseling sessions on diabetes management and prevention.

Impact of World Diabetes Day

In the village of Alandi, the university’s outreach activities have played a significant role in raising awareness about diabetes. During the World Diabetes Day event, blood sugar screenings identified 14 individuals with previously undiagnosed diabetes. These individuals were referred to the Vidyapeeth’s outpatient department for further evaluation and management, showcasing the direct impact of early detection programs. Post-event surveys indicated that many participants began adopting healthier eating habits and increased their physical activity following the awareness sessions.

Mental Health and Stress Management Initiatives

Recognizing the growing burden of mental health issues, Dr. D.Y. Patil Vidyapeeth has placed significant emphasis on mental health awareness and stress management in its outreach programs. These initiatives are designed to:

The street play organized on World Mental Health Day at the UHTC was a creative and effective method of engaging the local population. Through a dramatized performance, the actors portrayed common signs of mental illness, such as persistent sadness and anxiety, and demonstrated the importance of seeking help. The play also illustrated coping strategies, such as talking to friends and family, engaging in physical activity, and seeking professional help when needed. Feedback from the audience revealed that many had never considered mental health a priority before, but the event made them more aware of the signs to watch for in themselves and others.

Environmental Sustainability and Health

Environmental health is a key focus for Dr. D.Y. Patil Vidyapeeth’s outreach programs, recognizing the deep connection between a clean environment and overall public health. The Vidyapeeth’s campaigns in this area emphasize the importance of waste management, pollution control, and sustainable living practices, educating the community on how these factors directly impact their health.

World Environment Day (05/06/2023)

The university’s World Environment Day campaign focused on the theme of plastic pollution and its adverse effects on both environmental and human health. A series of activities were organized, including:

• Awareness Talks: Faculty members and students delivered talks on the harmful effects of plastic on the environment and its links to diseases such as cancer and respiratory problems.
• Tree Plantation Drives: The university organized tree-planting drives in collaboration with local schools and community groups, emphasizing the role of green spaces in reducing air pollution and promoting mental well-being. 18 saplings were planted in the Homeopathy Garden as part of this initiative.

Swachhata Abhiyan (02/10/2022)

As part of its commitment to hygiene and sanitation, the Vidyapeeth participated in the Swachhata Abhiyan (Cleanliness Drive) at Phule Nagar, Pimpri. Nursing students led the charge in cleaning local public spaces, distributing hygiene kits, and educating residents on the importance of waste disposal and keeping their surroundings clean.

Environmental Health and Hygiene Campaigns

During the Swachhata Abhiyan, student volunteers conducted door-to-door campaigns in the Pimpri area, educating residents about the importance of sanitation and the health risks posed by improper waste disposal. Over 60 beneficiaries, including families and local shopkeepers, participated in interactive sessions on hygiene practices such as proper waste segregation, the dangers of plastic use, and the significance of clean water in preventing diseases like diarrhea and cholera. The campaign had a lasting impact, with many residents reporting improved waste disposal practices in follow-up assessments conducted three months later.
