More than 10 % of the global population lives in extreme poverty today; they struggle to fulfil the most basic needs like health needs, educational desires, and access to healthy water, sanitation, and clothing. Most people living on less than the minimum daily financial needs are common in rural areas. Worldwide, the poverty rate in rural areas is 17.2 %—more than three times higher than in urban areas. One child amongst five lives in extreme poverty. Ensuring social protection for all children, especially girls and other vulnerable groups, is critical to reducing poverty. It shows up as starvation and malnutrition, restricted access to healthcare and other necessities.
Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, Pune is committed to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal 2 - Zero Hunger through its pro-active and visionary approach to address and support the same.
Several academic programs, short term and long-term courses, guest lectures etc have been organised keeping food security, nutrition and sustainable food practices in mind. All the stakeholders associated with these academic events are sensitised about the importance of food security in society and how nutrition is an integral part of health in society.
The Yashoda Milk Bank is one of the best practices of the University and is a noble initiative to address and support babies who are unable to get mother’s milk. The hospitals of the University are having various speciality clinics which are addressing various aspects related to food and nutrition in general as well as in vulnerable groups like mothers, children, elderly, and other disease specific patients.
All the constituent units of the University are engaged in a variety of extension and outreach activities which are addressing food security, nutrition and sustainable agricultural practices.
A Value-Added Course was successfully conducted from 09th to 11th March, 2023 MBA Agribusiness Management students. Dr. Prafull Gadge - MD, Biome Technologies Pvt. Ltd. was the key speaker for the session. Prof. Mandar Brahme Asst. Professor GBSRC along with Agribusiness Management students attended the Value Addition Course. Dr. Prafull Gadge also narrated few cases experienced by him during his visits to the farm. He gave insights about the role of supply chain management in promotion of pesticide products into market.
This value addition course offered an extensive education to the students of agribusiness management. A series of exciting sessions on management of pesticide and their regulations was of particular interest to the students.
Dr. Gadge focused on business opportunities involved in doing promotional activities. He made comparison in between India and rest of the world about the consumption of Plant growth regulators, bio – pesticides, bio – fertilizers, seeds, fodder, by-products etc. As per his analysis, he pointed out need and practices of regulations of pesticides in India

Human Milk Bank is an organized service for the selection of donor human mothers, collection of donor human milk (DHM), and processing, storage, and distribution of human breast milk for sick or premature newborns or low weight infants.
“YASHODA” Advanced Human Milk Bank, Comprehensive Lactation Management, Training & Research Center (YHMB & CLMTRC) has all advanced facilities for collection, processing, analysis, fortification, and storage of DHM.
Since its inception in 2013 “Yashoda” received voluntary breast milk donations from 9500 mothers and 13630 infants benefitted from the services of the milk bank.
Collection and distribution of human breast milk is an entirely free-of-cost facility provided by the organization though it involves a huge cost in the process of milk collection to distribution including administrative and logistic support.

Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre celebrated “Safe Motherhood Day!” on 11th April 2023 at 11am to 1 pm. This program was attended by total 42 postnatal mothers and their relatives in PNC Ward. “Benefits of breastfeeding to mothers” were highlighted by the team of Lactation consultants.
Dr. Shailaja Mane, Head, Dept. of Paediatrics stressed upon importance of breastfeeding to safeguard mothers and enhance their mental health. She explained how mothers need to focus on their own health and nutrition first so that they can take good care of their babies. She also answered the queries that mothers had about effective and adequate breastfeeding.
Ms. Rashmi Poduval enumerated the innumerable benefits that breastfeeding provides to the mothers. She spoke about health benefits, psychological benefits, and economic benefits of breastfeeding.
Dr. Pramila Menon spoke about the recommendation and techniques of breastfeeding and nutrition during breastfeeding. She provided information on how mothers can keep themselves healthy.
At the end of the session all mothers had taken a pledge to take care of their health and safeguard themselves and their babies through immense benefits that breastfeeding offers. They found the session to be really helpful and informative and it was very well appreciated by all.

all mothers and babies.”Lactation Consultants provide appropriate scientific information, practically help mothers breastfeed their babies and resolve their breastfeeding issues. The International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is the highest certification of competency in this field. Dr. D. Y. Patil Hospital, Pimpri has a team of six IBCLCs. Lactation clinic facility will thus, help their expertise and guidance reach maximum families in a timely manner.
Provision of various useful breastfeeding tools, teaching aids and educational handouts has been made at the clinic. Mothers will be able to get practical help, have their queries answered and moreover receive the emotional support that they need the most.
The ANC clinic of medical hospital distributes ‘Nutritious Ladoo’s’ to pregnant mothers who visit the clinic for check-up.
Dr. D. Y. Patil Dental College and Hospital, Pimpri, Pune visited SOFOSH-Society of Friends of Sassoon Hospital for Special Child (An Orphanage for mentally and physically Challenged kids) and distributed fruits to all kids in the month of September 2024.

Description: On the occasion of ‘National Nutrition Week’ a health awareness talk was organized at Solo high school in Alandi. The program started with
an introduction of National Nutrition week by Dr. Harshita and Dr. Rashi (interns) with the introduction of balanced diet and importance of nutrition in growing children. Dr. Seerat (intern) also spoke on preventive strategies to prevent IDA. Later, Mr. Joseph (HS) told the important components of balanced diet and how malnutrition should be prevented at an early stage. Mrs. Lata Khandare (Medical Social Worker) also told the students about the schemes the government is providing like ICDS, Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandan Yojana and scheme for adolescent girls. Dr. Vanshika (intern) had an interactive session with the children and told them about the importance of vitamins in our life. Mr. Pravin Kolhe educated the students about the mid-day meal programs which are running in our entire nation to prevent malnutrition in children of growing children. Dr. Vallari (PG resident) told the students about nutrition requirements according to the age groups and also spoke about importance of mental health in children. There were around 150 beneficiaries for the event and the event was highly appreciated by the public.

Description: ‘National Nutrition Week’ by organizing a Recipe competition (on nutrition) was celebrated by organizing a recipe competition at Koyali. The local women participated in the competition by making various dishes. Dr. Shweta (LMO) gave indepth information on balanced nutrition. The dishes by the women were observed by Dr. Shweta, Sarpanch and other dignitaries. Aanganwadi Sevika and Asha workers, helpers supported the program. The Deputy Sarpanch of Koyali addressed the women and convinced them how health depends on nutrition food. Interns Dr. Vanshika, Dr. Tanya, and Dr. Inshira spoke on importance of balanced diet and malnutrition amongst under five. There were around 75 beneficiaries for the event and the event was highly appreciated by the public.

Description: Dr. D.Y. Patil RHTC center Alandi celebrated National Nutrition week on 7th September 2022, at RHTC, Alandi with the support of MBBS interns, medical officers, and staff. The event started with health talk given in Hindi by Dr. Shweta (LMO), who briefed the audience about the importance of consuming a Healthy & Nutritious meal. Then, Dr. Shraddha informed the audience about Iron Deficiency Anemia (IDA), its causes, and prevention. Following this, Dr. Ajinkya explained in detail about the importance of consuming a balanced diet. The event was successfully conducted by the RHTC Staff and well received by the public. There were around 62 beneficiaries for the event and the event was highly appreciated by the attendees.
The Rachana Sharir department with the help of Rasashastra Evam Bhaishajyakalpana department, Dr. D. Y. Patil College of Ayurveda and Research Centre, Pimpri, Pune has successfully organized cooking competition under the theme of “Har Din Har Ghar Ayurveda” on 10th October 2022. Ten students from UG and PG courses have participated in this competition.
Ahaar Rahasya Competition” was organized by the Swasthavritta and Yoga Department in the Yoga Hall of Dr. D.Y Patil College of Ayurved and Research Centre, Pune on 17th April 2023 on the occasion of World Health day 2023. UG and PG students were invited to come with classical or innovative Beverages/porridge recipes. 32 students were participated with their innovative and delicious recipes presented beautifully.
DYPBBI celebrated ‘World Environment Day 2023’, highlighting themes of saving water, adopting sustainable food systems, reducing waste, and promoting healthy lifestyles. These efforts aligned with SDG 2 – Zero Hunger, focusing on promoting sustainable agriculture and reducing food insecurity.
The participants were sensitised towards waste segregation and preparing compost from food and plant wast and using it for gardening as well as farming.
Participants took an "Environment Pledge" to adopt eco-friendly practices, contributing to a sustainable lifestyle. The audience was explained about the importance of upcycling waste and creating value-added products such as biochar and biocompost to foster sustainable changes and enhance the circular economy within waste management systems.

The NSS Unit of Dr. D. Y. Patil Biotechnology & Bioinformatics Institute, organized an awareness program on 31 May 2023 for World No Tobacco Day, aligning with this year's theme, "Grow Food, Not Tobacco," contributing to SDG 2. The event aimed to raise awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco consumption on health, the environment, and its impact on food security.
Key objectives included discussing the hazards of tobacco cultivation, its environmental impact, and the benefits of quitting tobacco. The program highlighted how tobacco farming affects food production, contributing to hunger and malnutrition.

Agribusiness Management students of Global Business School and Research Centre, Pune organized a fun mango festival, EL-MANGO-FISTA 2K23. (17th to 27th April 2023) Students sold premium sustainably farmed natural mangoes with a turnover of 1 lakh through this festival and learnt management concepts like sales, marketing, supply chain etc. They got a chance to interact with farmers as well during purchase of these mangoes and exchanged information on production and market for naturally farmed mangoes.
A group of ten farmers from Vadgaon, Maval visited Dr. D.Y. Patil Biotechnology and Bioinformatics Institute (Dr. D.Y Patil Vidyapeeth), Pune on 23rd September, 2022 to explore modern agricultural innovations.
During their visit, they were introduced to plant tissue culture techniques, which offer the potential to produce disease-free, high-yielding plants. The farmers witnessed a demonstration of how large numbers of uniform plants can be generated from a single parent plant under controlled conditions. They learned about the advantages of tissue culture, including rapid plant multiplication, year-round production, and the conservation of rare or endangered species. The role of tissue culture in ensuring genetic consistency and enhancing crop resistance to diseases was also highlighted, showcasing its importance in modern agriculture and food production.
The farmers were also informed about the benefits of biofertilizers and their crucial role in enhancing plant growth by improving nutrient availability. The session highlighted how biofertilizers can reduce reliance on chemical fertilizers, improve soil fertility, and help maintain ecological balance. Various types of biofertilizers, including nitrogen-fixing bacteria, phosphate-solubilizing microorganisms, and mycorrhiza, were explained in detail, demonstrating their contribution to sustainable agriculture. The farmers gained valuable insights into how biofertilizers can reduce farming costs, boost crop yields, and encourage environmentally friendly practices, making them essential for long-term agricultural sustainability. Director Dr. J.K Pal greeted the visit team. The laboratory demonstrations were carried out by Dr. Minal Wani, Dr. Supriyo Chowdhari and Dr. Supriya Kore.

The Biosmotrap addresses the challenge of maintaining cleaner air in farming areas, which directly affects crop productivity and human health. On the other hand, Avapro contributes to more nutritious and sustainable poultry farming practices, ensuring healthier food products and supporting agricultural resilience.
A team of researchers from the Microbial Diversity Research Centre (MDRC), including Ms. Priyanka, Ms. Bhagyashree, and Mr. Mohsin Shaikh, along with Dr. Junnarkar, presented their findings and displayed their products for the audience. The live demonstration of the Biosmotrap showcased its practical application in agricultural settings, emphasizing its potential to create a cleaner and more sustainable environment for food production.
