8. Decent Work & Economic Growth

Introduction:

More than 10 % of the global population lives in extreme poverty today; they struggle to fulfil the most basic needs like health needs, educational desires, and access to healthy water, sanitation, and clothing. Most people living on less than the minimum daily financial needs are common in rural areas. Worldwide, the poverty rate in rural areas is 17.2 %—more than three times higher than in urban areas. One child amongst five lives in extreme poverty. Ensuring social protection for all children, especially girls and other vulnerable groups, is critical to reducing poverty. It shows up as starvation and malnutrition, restricted access to healthcare and other necessities.

8. Decent Work & Economic Growth

Introduction:

Sustainable Development Goal 8 (SDG 8) aims to promote sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all. Recognizing that economic development is essential for improving living standards and reducing poverty, SDG 8 underscores the importance of creating opportunities that ensure dignity and equity for every worker.

Key Aspects of SDG 8

  1. Inclusive Economic Growth: SDG 8 advocates for policies that stimulate economic growth while ensuring that the benefits are shared widely. This includes supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which are critical for job creation and economic resilience.
  2. Decent Work: The goal emphasizes the need for decent work, which entails fair wages, safe working conditions, and respect for workers' rights. Ensuring that everyone has access to productive employment opportunities helps to combat inequality and poverty.
  3. Youth Employment: With a significant proportion of the global population under 25, SDG 8 highlights the necessity of providing skills training and job opportunities for youth. Investing in education and vocational training is crucial to equip young people for the labour market.
  4. Gender Equality: The goal also addresses the gender disparities in employment and wages. Promoting equal opportunities and rights for women in the workforce is essential for fostering economic growth and development.
  5. Sustainable Practices: Economic growth should not come at the expense of the environment. SDG 8 encourages industries to adopt sustainable practices that protect the planet while generating economic benefits.
  6. Resilience to Economic Shocks: Building resilient economies that can withstand global economic fluctuations is vital. This involves diversifying economies and supporting sectors that can adapt to changes, ensuring that communities remain stable in times of crisis.
  7. Global Partnerships: Achieving SDG 8 requires cooperation between governments, the private sector, and civil society. Partnerships can foster innovation and share resources, knowledge, and best practices across regions.

Progress and Challenges

While progress has been made in many areas, challenges remain. Global unemployment rates have fluctuated, exacerbated by economic shocks such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Many workers face informal employment conditions, which lack security and benefits. Additionally, the increasing prevalence of automation and digitalization poses threats to traditional job sectors, necessitating upskilling and reskilling initiatives.

Conclusion

SDG 8 is vital for fostering economic prosperity and ensuring that growth benefits all members of society. By prioritizing decent work and sustainable practices, countries can build resilient economies that provide opportunities for everyone. Collaboration and innovative approaches will be crucial in overcoming current challenges and achieving the targets set forth by this goal, paving the way for a more equitable and sustainable future.
