17. Partnership For The Goals

Introduction:

More than 10 % of the global population lives in extreme poverty today; they struggle to fulfil the most basic needs like health needs, educational desires, and access to healthy water, sanitation, and clothing. Most people living on less than the minimum daily financial needs are common in rural areas. Worldwide, the poverty rate in rural areas is 17.2 %—more than three times higher than in urban areas. One child amongst five lives in extreme poverty. Ensuring social protection for all children, especially girls and other vulnerable groups, is critical to reducing poverty. It shows up as starvation and malnutrition, restricted access to healthcare and other necessities.

17. Partnership For The Goals

Introduction:

In 2015, all members of the United Nations endorsed the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which established 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Introduction to SDG 17:

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development :

In September 2015, all United Nations (UN) Member States adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, a comprehensive framework consisting of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aimed at transforming the world by addressing global challenges, including poverty, inequality, environmental degradation, and peace. The SDGs are built on the principle of "leaving no one behind," which emphasizes inclusivity, and target all forms of inequalities across regions, genders, and social classes.

The SDGs are universal in nature, applicable to both developed and developing countries, and they serve as an actionable blueprint for governments, institutions, private sectors, and individuals to collaborate toward common goals. The 17 SDGs are interconnected, meaning that action in one area will affect outcomes in others. Thus, achieving sustainable development requires holistic and integrated efforts across sectors, including education, health, energy, and governance.

Key SDGs Focus: The 17 SDGs cover areas like ending poverty (SDG-1), quality education (SDG-4), gender equality (SDG-5), affordable and clean energy (SDG-7), and good health and well-being (SDG-3).

Sustainable Development Goal 17 (SDG 17) emphasizes the importance of partnerships for achieving the entire framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). For health universities, this goal is particularly critical as it fosters collaborative efforts necessary to tackle global health challenges, improve health systems, and enhance educational outcomes.

Health universities play a pivotal role in training future healthcare professionals, conducting impactful research, and engaging with communities to promote health and well-being. By aligning their missions with SDG 17, these institutions can leverage partnerships across various sectors—government, academia, private industry, and civil society—to create synergies that amplify their impact.

Effective partnerships enable health universities to share knowledge, resources, and best practices. They also facilitate interdisciplinary approaches to health issues, fostering innovation and enabling institutions to respond effectively to emerging health threats, such as pandemics, non-communicable diseases, and health inequities

Moreover, engaging with a diverse array of stakeholders enhances the university's ability to address the social determinants of health, ensuring that educational programs and research initiatives are relevant and responsive to community needs. This collaborative approach not only strengthens the university's contributions to health outcomes but also promotes inclusivity and equity in health education and access to healthcare. SDG 17 provides a framework for health universities to enhance their partnerships, driving progress towards the SDGs while reinforcing their commitment to improving health and well-being both locally and globally. By fostering collaboration, health universities can become vital players in the global movement towards sustainable health solutions.

Sustainable Development Goal 17 (SDG 17) addresses the issue of "Partnerships for the Goals." It emphasizes the importance of collaboration and cooperation among the various stakeholders, including governments of all nations, businesses, civil society, Universities, and academia, to ensure that all the other 16 Sustainable Development Goals are complied with. For a healthcare university such as Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, embracing SDG 17 is achieved through activities and initiatives that foster partnerships and collaborations aimed at addressing global challenges and promoting sustainable development. Here are several activities and potential outcomes for a university in line with SDG 17.
