More than 10 % of the global population lives in extreme poverty today; they struggle to fulfil the most basic needs like health needs, educational desires, and access to healthy water, sanitation, and clothing. Most people living on less than the minimum daily financial needs are common in rural areas. Worldwide, the poverty rate in rural areas is 17.2 %—more than three times higher than in urban areas. One child amongst five lives in extreme poverty. Ensuring social protection for all children, especially girls and other vulnerable groups, is critical to reducing poverty. It shows up as starvation and malnutrition, restricted access to healthcare and other necessities.
Sustainable Development Goal 15 emphasizes the need to protect, restore, and promote the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, which are essential for our survival and well-being. This goal includes key targets aimed at conserving both terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems, halting deforestation, reversing land degradation, and preserving biodiversity.
Our University is committed to promoting environmental sustainability through education, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 15.2, which focuses on the sustainable management of forests, combating desertification, halting and reversing land degradation, and stopping biodiversity loss. Through this initiative, our University aims to raise awareness about the importance of preserving land ecosystems among students, faculty, and the community.
Educational programs, workshops, and seminars are regularly conducted to emphasize the role of stakeholders and organizations in protecting forests and managing land sustainably. Practical activities such as tree plantation drives, soil conservation projects through Government of India flagship programs such as “Meri Maati-Mera Desh” and community engagement are integrated to encourage active participation in ecological preservation efforts. By fostering environmental consciousness, our University empowers future leaders to advocate and implement sustainable land management practices.
As a university, we understand the urgency of mobilizing and significantly increasing financial resources to conserve and sustainably use biodiversity and ecosystems. Through a collaborative and comprehensive approach, we secure the benefits of land-based ecosystems—such as sustainable livelihoods, clean air, and water—for future generations. Together, we ensure that both nature and our communities thrive, making significant strides toward achieving SDG 15. Our University has received the “One District One Green Champion” Award for the Swachhata Action Plan conducted by the Mahatma Gandhi National Council of Rural Education under the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India.
