10. Reduced Inequalities

Introduction:

More than 10 % of the global population lives in extreme poverty today; they struggle to fulfil the most basic needs like health needs, educational desires, and access to healthy water, sanitation, and clothing. Most people living on less than the minimum daily financial needs are common in rural areas. Worldwide, the poverty rate in rural areas is 17.2 %—more than three times higher than in urban areas. One child amongst five lives in extreme poverty. Ensuring social protection for all children, especially girls and other vulnerable groups, is critical to reducing poverty. It shows up as starvation and malnutrition, restricted access to healthcare and other necessities.

10. Reduced Inequalities

Introductions:

Preamble on Partnerships for Reduced Inequality

The pursuit of sustainable development, as embodied in the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), necessitates a nuanced understanding of the interconnectedness of disadvantage groups. To achieve long-term social and economic development, reduce poverty, and promote equality, it is crucial to address the complex issues of disadvantage that pervade various segments of society, including students. In alignment with the SDGs' mandate, our Higher Education Institution (HEI) is committed to tackling inequalities, economic disparities, and health inequities at national and international levels.

As a premier health program and research-oriented organization, our HEI has established a robust research agenda focused on issues of inequalities, holistic integration, and participation of disadvantaged and underrepresented groups. Our research endeavors prioritize the exploration of intersectional disadvantages, fostering inclusive environments, and promoting social mobility.

In 2023, our University made significant strides in knowledge creation and dissemination, publishing high-impact research in top-tier journals such as The Lancet, Lancet Oncology, and Oral Oncology, which rank among the top 10% globally. Notably, our citations and publications related to reduced inequalities and representations of disadvantages witnessed a remarkable surge, exceeding 100 indexed publications (SDS10). This accomplishment underscores our dedication to advancing SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) and promoting evidence-based solutions.

To address economic inequality, we track and support students from low-income backgrounds, first-generation university attendees, and those from lower-middle-income countries such as Nepal, Oman, and Nigeria. By fostering diversity and inclusion, we create opportunities for social mobility and equitable access to education.

Furthermore, our University prioritizes health equity, ensuring accessible facilities and support services for students and faculty with disabilities. This includes ramps, lifts, adaptable washrooms, and inclusive recreation spaces, empowering individuals with disabilities to participate fully in teaching and learning environments. By promoting physical and mental well-being, we strive to create a culture of inclusivity, equity, and social justice, aligning with SDG 3(Good Health and Well-being).

Through these concerted efforts, our HEI demonstrates its commitment to the SDGs, cultivating a sustainable, equitable, and healthy environment for all stakeholders, and contributing meaningfully to the global agenda of reducing inequalities and promoting sustainable development.

Initiatives and roadmaps for achieving reduced Inequality

The university's initiative to support underrepresented groups is truly commendable. The University have implemented various programs to foster participation and holistic development of students from diverse backgrounds, including those with disabilities, first-generation students, international students, minorities, and economically disadvantaged individuals.

Their support system includes mentorship programs, counseling services, medical assistance, peer support, and yoga-wellness instructors to promote overall well-being and academic success. This comprehensive approach ensures that students from underrepresented groups receive the necessary resources to thrive.

Key Support Initiatives:

  • Mentorship Programs: Pairing students with experienced mentors for guidance and support
  • Counseling Services: Providing emotional support and addressing mental health concerns
  • Medical Assistance: Ensuring access to healthcare services for students in need
  • Peer Support: Connecting students with peers who share similar experiences and challenges
  • Yoga-Wellness Programs: Promoting physical and mental well-being through mindfulness practices

Additionally, the university has appointed a Diversity Officer to oversee policies, programs, and training related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and human rights. This ensures a commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive campus environment.

Policy Framework for Reduced Inequality

The university has also established anti-harassment and anti-discrimination policies, as well as statutory committees and cells, in line with Government of India guidelines. These measures safeguard the rights and dignity of students, faculty, and non-teaching staff from underrepresented groups.

Overall, the university's proactive approach to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion sets a positive example for creating a supportive and inclusive academic community.

The Universities organizes blood donation camps to support the health benefits to economically weaker sections and underrepresented groups.

The university demonstrates a strong commitment to social responsibility through its extensive outreach programs, targeting underrepresented groups in society. These initiatives prioritize health, wellness, and environmental awareness, bridging gaps in economic and health disparities.

Community Outreach Programs:

  1. Free Dental Screening Camps: Providing access to oral health checks and education.
  2. Health Checkup Camps: Offering comprehensive medical evaluations and consultations.
  3. Multi-Diagnostic Camps: Utilizing advanced technology for thorough health assessments.

Sensitization and Awareness Programs:

  1. Health Awareness: Educating communities on disease prevention, nutrition, and hygiene.
  2. Environmental Awareness: Promoting sustainable practices, waste management, and conservation.
  3. Economic Empowerment: Offering financial literacy, skill development, and entrepreneurship guidance.

Beneficiary Groups:

  1. Students: Ensuring campus community well-being.
  2. Faculty and Non-Teaching Staff: Supporting university employees.
  3. Local Communities: Serving neighborhoods surrounding university campuses.
  4. Adopted Villages: Fostering rural development through health and education initiatives.
  5. Government Units: Collaborating on public health and social welfare projects.
  6. NGOs: Partnering with non-governmental organizations for amplified impact.

Impact on achieving Reduced Inequality

  1. Improved health outcomes for marginalized communities.
  2. Enhanced environmental consciousness and sustainable practices.
  3. Economic empowerment through education and skill development.
  4. Strengthened relationships between the university and local communities.

The university's proactive engagement with underrepresented groups exemplifies its dedication to social responsibility, fostering a healthier, more equitable society

Reducing gender disparities in Sustainable Programs, Courses and work-place

The university ensures every efforts in promoting sustainability and inclusivity. Its cohesive programs and courses focus on holistic development, empowering students, teachers, and non-teaching staff to become future leaders for the achievement of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). The University has displayed commitment to gender equality, particularly in developing countries like India where women's participation is often limited. Here, women make up 68% of the student body, and there's a notable female-to-male teacher ratio. This sets a strong foundation for fostering diversity and representation. The university's leadership reflects its dedication to inclusivity, with women holding key positions such as Pro-Chancellor, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Directors/Principals of constituent colleges and Heads of Departments. This not only promotes diversity but also provides inspiring role models for students. By combining inclusive leadership, sustainability-focused education, and holistic development, the university is nurturing a new generation of leaders poised to make a positive impact on the world.

Evidence: Integration of importance of gender equity, ethics, human values, society and environment in various courses and programs of the Vidyapeeth

Community Engagement and Welfare Measures:

"Dr. D.Y. Patil Vidyapeeth has implemented a 'Zero Hunger' policy across its hospitals as a welfare initiative. This ensures that all in-patients receive complimentary meals throughout their stay. Our commitment to quality and hygiene is reflected in the daily preparation and serving of fresh food. Expert dieticians tailor nutritional diets to meet each patient's needs and oversee food quality. This nutritious food, particularly beneficial for patients from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, facilitates faster recovery and maintains essential nutritional intake during hospitalization. Additionally, our hospitals offer discounted medicines, making medical care both affordable and accessible to all.
